pinterest for your photography business

Does your business need a Pinterest account?

The answer is YES!

Pinterest is known as an image sharing and social media platform, BUT that isn’t the only thing it could be used for. It is also a search engine and targeted advertising tool, which can be used to drive traffic to your owned website. Similar to Instagram (before Insta transitioned into a video and entertainment platform), it is a great marketing tool to showcase your portfolio.

Pins are more successful with these: title, keyword/ hashtags & redirecting link.

Title is the headline and should be kept short/ simple. You are allowed up to 100 characters but only the first 30-35 will be shown on the feed. I like to have my business name and service as the title so that more people become familiar with my brand.

Keywords & hashtags are how Pinterest determines your content. Once Pinterest can categorize your content, it can then push it to people searching for similar keywords. Choose keywords specific to your page and the photo. Here are a few examples of different groups of keywords that I alternate between, depending on the type of photo.

Redirecting link is used to drive traffic to a different website or page. I want all my traffic to be directed to my website because it has information on my services, portfolio, and a contact form. My goal is to have people submit an inquiry through my site. If your goal is to grow your audience and engage with them, Instagram might be your preferred redirecting link.

Tailwind is a Pinterest & Instagram tool that allows you to schedule posts.

Managing your Pinterest account doesn’t need to be complicated, especially when you can use scheduling apps like Tailwind. They also offer free trials which are a great way to test out the app and then decide if you’d want to invest in their paid plan.

  • Pinterest 100 free Pins

  • Instagram 31 free posts

Let’s take a look at my account’s analytics!

Analytic Terms

  • Impressions: number of times your Pins were screened

  • Engagements: engagement on Pins, clicks & saves

  • Total audience: number of Pinners who saw or engaged with your Pins

  • Engaged audience: number of Pinners who engaged with your Pins

Before scheduling all my Pins on Tailwind, I’d manually create it on Pinterest and post/ schedule. Since this method was a bit more time-consuming, I was not consistent and only made a few Pins. Here are my analytics when I was using this method between Feb 9, 2021 - May 8, 2021.

Impressions increased by 76% and engagement by 333%. The total audience dropped by 32% while engaged audience increased by 33%.

On May 9, I started scheduling all of my Pins and allowed Tailwind to auto-select the best times to post. 3 - 4 Pins were scheduled every day up until June 6. During this timeframe, the performance on my account significantly increased.

Impressions increased by 1,239%, engagement by 480%, total audience by 1,911%, and engaged audience by 600%.

On June 7, the day after all my scheduled 100 Pins were pushed, I shared that I had been using Pinterest for my business on my Instagram story. Advertising my Pinterest usage drove a lot of traffic to my page. From my understanding, a lot of photographers are not utilizing Pinterest to grow their business.

The following month, I didn’t post anything on Pinterest to test out how the traffic and engagement will play out. Although I stopped posting people were still seeing my content and engaging.

Impressions increased by 53%, total audience by 77%, engaged audience by 26% and engagement dropped by 3.3%.

Unlike fast-paced social platforms like Instagram and TikTok, Pinterest’s algorithm is not aggressively changing to favor fresh content. Since it is also a search engine, your Pins are evergreen and can still get traction regardless of current trends.

Have you been convinced that Pinterest is a great tool for your business?! 🙃
